Crowds clamor for more beach polo action in Grey Goose North Beach Women’s Cup Finals

By Alex Webbe

Warmer weather and light breezes greeted the nearly two thousand spectators that
showed up at Chicago’s North Avenue Beach for Sunday’s final round of play in
the debut of the Grey Goose North Beach Women’s Polo Cup.

The finalists had been determined in Saturday’s contests with Gascon and Lufthansa Private Jet scoring  wins over Grey Goose and Trump Residence, respectively, while Titan Commercial and LufthansaPrivate Jet  emerged from the five teams in contention for the world cup.

The highly-touted Gascon polo team of Melissa Hornung, Tara Lordi and Angela York
arrived in Chicago as the odds-on favorite in the Grey Goose North Beach
Women’s Polo Cup, and did little to tarnish their image as York scored the
opening goal of the game for a 1-0 lead after the first period of play.

Lufthansa Private Jet responded with goals from Megan West and Whitney Vogt (penalty conversion).  Hornung’s first goal of the day had the score knotted up at 2-2 after the first half of play.

Valerie Biehl opened the scoring in the third to give Lufthansa Private Jet a 3-2 advantage, but Gascon fought back to get the tying goal on a penalty shot from York.  The score was all even at 3-3 with one chukker left to play in regulation time.

Vogt’s second penalty goal of the game came in the fourth chukker and gave Lufthansa Private Jet a 4-3 edge with time running out when Tara Lordi scored her first goal of the game to knot it up at 4-4 as time expired.

A confident Gascon team stepped up for the overtime shoot-out, a formula that would allow each member of each team an opportunity to score on a penalty shot with each
team taking turns until the winner emerged.

Hornung, Lordi and York had captured the South Beach Championship in April in the same manner, and were confident of their chances in Chicago.  With five of the first six shots going wide of the mark, and all three Gascon shots missing, it would be Vogt who would prove the difference scoring her third goal of the day for the Lufthansa Private Jet win.

Vogt led all scoring with three goals.  Teammates West
and Biehl added single goals in the win.

York led the Gascon team with a pair of goals.  Hornung and Lordi scored single goals in a losing effort.

Vogt was named MVP for her efforts while Marcelo Cabeza’s Negrita, played by Tara Lordi, was named Best Playing Pony.

GREY GOOSE TAKES CONSOLATION ROUND OF
PLAY

In earlier action, Grey Goose scored a narrow 4-3 win over Trump Residence on a penalty shot from Samantha Falbe in the final seconds of regulation play to capture the consolation round of the Grey Goose North Beach Women’s Polo Cup.

Trump took the early lead on first chukker goals from Nigeria’s Neku Atawodi and Tracy Regas, with Grey Goose settling for a lone goal from Brazilian Paula Chermont.  Falbe tied it up at 2-2 in the second chukker, but Regas closed out the first half scoring with her second goal of the game for a 3-2 halftime lead for the Trump Residence trio.

Both teams pressed the attack in the second half of play, but defense held firm.  Penalty conversions from Aimee Waters in the third and Falbe in the fourth accounted for the final scores of the match.  Falbe’s penalty shot came with seconds left to play and secured the win for the Grey Goose team.

HUA HIN BEACH POLO

Beach polo action on the Hua Hin Beach in Thailand

The first beach polo event in Thailand took place on April 11th in a two chukker exhibition match between the Thai Polo team and the distinguished team of Royal Pahang of Malaysia in a fund raising effort for the Princess Mother’s Charities.

With all of the pomp of England’s Cartier Day, a marching band of Thai children from Hua Hin led the parade of 60 horses through the center of the quaint little town and directly onto the beachfront of the Intercontinental Hua Hin resort to take part in the opening ceremony.

Activities began with a horseback fashion show that included many Thai celebrities, socialites and children among the guests, showing off Burberry, La Martina as well as La Perla beachwear.

A 300 meter fundraising horse race took place on the beach, following the horseback fashion show, with ten horses competing for the winning spot before the polo games got underway.

As a prelude to the feature match, a children’s game took place.  The fast-paced and exciting competition featured a young Thai Polo team and a Beach polo team.

During the main event, Mr. Harald Link’s Thai Polo team found itself on the short end of a 5-4 score, with Royal Pahang, cheered on by Prince Abdullah,  raising the cup at the end of the game.

With the onset of the evening, the Bangkok Symphony entertained the guests, who danced to the music in the waning light of the day that was capped by a delightful barbeque dinner in the well appointed gardens of the Intercontinental Hua Hin Resort.

The Lalit Suri Beach Polo Exhibition Match in Goa, India

Beach Polo in Goa, India-2009

The first event of its kind in India took place on December 31, 2009 in the Lalit Suri Beach Exhibition Polo Goa hosted by Mrs. Jyotsna Suri, Chairperson & Managing Director of The Lalit Suri Hospitality Group.  Marking the introduction of the sport of beach polo to a country steeped in polo history and traditions, the event attracted a host of well-known Indian players who took the field (beach) to pit their skills against one another in the spectacular setting of the InterContinental The Lalit Goa Resort’s Raj Baba Beach.

Previously limited to such exotic venues as Miami, Dubai, Punta del Este, to name a few, beach polo’s debut in India was quite well received.

Twenty highly trained polo ponies were brought in from Delhi for the 1pm exhibition match that attracted some of the country’s more notable players.  In an effort to make the exhibition match as comfortable as possible for the spectators, noted polo commentator Pradeep (Bogey) Rao was on hand to report and comment on the action on the beach.

The Exhibition Match was played between The Lalit Red Team (Jai Shergill, Navin Khanna and Angad Kalaan) and The Lalit White Team (Dr. Pawandeep S Kohli, Ransher Singh and Uday Kalaan). The thrilling match, which was umpired by Preetinder Singh, saw The Lalit White Team escape with a 5-4 victory.  A sand game arena and a tiered viewing gallery were specially created for the event, much to the appreciation of a host of VIPs and onlookers.

Honorable Chief Minister of Goa, Mr. Digambar Kamat, was the Guest of Honor for this extremely exciting and unique event, and said “I would like to congratulate & compliment Mrs. Jyotsna Suri for putting the beautiful Raj Baga Beach on the world map of Beach Polo.”
Mrs. Jyotsna Suri confirmed the commitment of The Lalit Suri Hospitality Group by stating, “We are committed to make this an annual festival in Goa and would be back on a much larger scale, next year. The idea is to bring about a huge awareness for this region of Goa with this unique event and also to encourage participation from the local communities thus catapulting the area into a holistic tourist attraction.”
